Late middle Miocene Metatheria (Mammalia: Didelphimorphia and Paucituberculata) from Juan Guerra, San Martín Department, Peruvian Amazonia

Currently, marsupials (modern members of the Metatheria clade) are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical areas South America, but poorly represented fossil record these regions. Except for species-rich fossiliferous localities La Venta Colombia, additional Miocene metatherians from tropical, equatorial America sparsely reported Bolivia, Brazil, Peru, Venezuela. Here, we introduce new metatherian remains recovered late middle locality TAR-31, San Martín Department, which has been assigned to Laventan American Land Mammal Age (∼13 Ma) by mammalian biostratigraphy. Three taxa recognized at TAR-31: didelphid didelphimorph ‘Thylamys’ cf. ‘T.’ colombianus, paucituberculatans aff. Palaeothentes Pitheculites ipururensis sp. nov. This assemblage presence a cebid primate TAR-31 suggests predominantly humid warm conditions, with occurrence both forests drier habitats surroundings. Comparisons other assemblages low mid latitudes clearly confirm close relationships between (agreeing observations based on monkeys rodents), as well as, lesser extent, Acre River local faunas Madre de Dios (MD-67) Brazil respectively. The current results support hypothesis that Western Amazonia was single consistent biogeographical region land mammals over times, western edge Pebas Mega-Wetland System, highlight role Amazonian concerning marsupial Neogene radiation. U–Pb analysis made detrital zircon grains gave maximum depositional age 17.4 ± 0.12 Ma (i.e., 4 older than biostratigraphical age), mixed source likely comprising Precambrian (Western Amazon Craton), Neoproterozoic (Neoproterozoic mobile belts), Phanerozoic rocks (Andes).
